What Is The Common Goal?
In every negotiation, there is a common goal. If your partner is bickering over your choice of restaurant, remind yourself that the common goal here is sharing a meal. Does it truly matter where you go? There is no need to strong-arm your way or apply pressure to get your argument through.
You need to understand the desires and wants of the other side.
Instead of wasting energy on arguments, brainstorm ideas and then decide on options that appeal to both sides.
Focus On What’s Important
Sometimes, you may get what you want but lose the relationship with the other person. A good outcome does not include winning when it hurts someone else.
Watch your body language and the words you use. Listen carefully and understand the other point of view. Often you will notice that people want to be listened to and once they are heard, they are willing to negotiate with you.
Negotiating Should Be Done In Person
Using a phone as a buffer can create bigger problems. The other person will struggle to pick up on your tone and meaning. There is more room for misunderstanding and misinterpretation.
When you communicate in person, there is a lower chance of your words losing their meaning and context.
