The latest studies on human memory and information processing reveal that you can work with only 3-4 items of data at a time.
A simple example is when someone gives you their phone number. It is much easier for us to process it by breaking a 10-digit number into 3 blocks of 3-4 digits.
Also when humans faced with numerous options, it seems to cause analysis-paralysis.
Not More Than 3-4 Choices
We all have limited access to time, energy, and attention. Focusing your energy on the most important tasks leads to completion. If you are distracted and trying to multi-task, it is less likely that you will get anything done.
It is also true that trying to focus on a dozen things at a time is a waste of time and energy. If you have a list of goals, you are more likely to succeed by sticking to 3-4 of the most important ones. Stick to the what is actually important rather than trying to accomplish all of them.
The same applies to keeping a gratitude journal. Write down a daily list of not more than 3-4 things you are thankful for that day.
Less Choices Equals Faster Decisions
Apply this limiting principle in other areas of your life as well. Restricting the number of choices you have to make results in quicker decision making.
Take a leaf from the books of Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, and Barack Obama – they all stuck to a uniform choice of clothes to avoid having to waste time in wardrobe choices.
Make life easier and more productive by reducing the choices you have to make.
