How to Get a Handle on Sleep
We have talked about sleep in this blog before, and have acknowledged that it is one of the most important elements of health and wellbeing, including success. Despite the importance of sleep, though, it seems to elude even the best of us, leaving us tired, cranky, and unable to function at maximum capacity. Here are a few tips for getting a handle on sleep:
Control Stress and Anxiety
Stress and anxiety are two of the major causes of sleep loss in America, and if you are worried about something, it may be interfering with your ability to get the shuteye you need. Before turning to medications, try meditation, exercise, counseling, and other outlets for stress – chances are, your sleep will improve, too.
One of the best ways to improve the chances of good sleep is to exercise. When you exercise, your body may just be tired enough to let you fall asleep, as it needs the sleep for all that tissue and muscle repair.
Another trick for getting a good night’s sleep is to put in place a bedtime routine. For example: 9:00 p.m. – take out the dog; 9:15 p.m. – read in bed for 30 minutes with a cup of tea; 10:00 p.m. – lights out. Waking up at the same time every day will help, too.
