Are You A Highly Introverted Or A Highly Sensitive Person?

Author Elaine Aron wrote a bestselling book with the title, “The Highly Sensitive Person: How To Thrive When The World Overwhelms You” to define a personality trait that affects one out of five people.

Connected with the popular idea of introversion, a highly sensitive person is strongly aware of the energies of the people around them. They tend to be overwhelmed easily by strong sensory inputs and have a rich and complex inner life.

Understand how your emotions dictate your mood and vice-versa.

Highly Sensitive People Are Generally Introverted

Do you process everything around you, are reflective and make associations quite easily with what’s going on around you? When not fully conscious, this trait is understood as having a strong intuition.

To check your rating on the sensitivity scale, here are a few preliminary questions:

  1. Are you easily rattled by loud noises (sirens, loud music, etc.)?
  2. Do you absorb the energy of the people around you and are easily affected by it?
  3. Do you feel the need to withdraw to a dark place or to your bed when situations in life get overwhelming?
  4. Are you deeply moved by certain music or the arts?
  5. Do you try really hard to avoid making mistakes or forgetting things?
  6. Does being hungry disrupt your concentration and create a strong reaction in your mood?
  7. Were you referred to as the shy child when you were young by parents and teachers?

This is a starting list to determine if you are part of the 20% of the population that are highly sensitive people.

If you discover that you or your child are highly sensitive (it tends to run in the family), be sure to understand the personality trait and how to handle it. Rather than treating it as a disorder, see it for what it is – a personality trait that requires some care and attention.

Learn some basic techniques to clean up your energetics. Once you clean up your energy it will feel like you’ve lifted a ton of bricks from your shoulders and body. Getting sufficient rest, eating a healthy diet with regular meal times and avoiding high-stimulus environments are all key for the highly sensitive person to feel at ease.
