Resolve conflict faster with this simple technique – listen and acknowledge.
There are two reasons why conflicts escalate:
People are not getting what they want and they need you to acknowledge their loss (click HERE).
People are being misunderstood and they just want you to listen to their point of view.
Level 5 Listening Alleviates Conflict
Listening deeply encourages the other party to empty their emotions. After they have fully said their piece, they are more willing to listen to your side of the story and find a solution that suits both parties.
So, step one is to listen carefully (click Here).
When someone is dumping their frustrations on to you, avoid telling them what to do.
In fact, avoid talking. Just listen patiently (click HERE).
Even if you fully disagree with them, avoid pointing out the flaws in their argument. Allow them the space and time they need to express their opinions and frustrations.
Acknowledge Their Frustration
When someone is frustrated with you, the last thing they want to hear is justifications for your behavior. Save the excuses and simply acknowledge that the other person is frustrated and annoyed.
Acknowledgment does not imply your fault. It does not incriminate you but it accepts the emotional state of the other person.
When you acknowledge how someone feels, often the source of their frustration is less of an issue.
Justifying your behavior or decision might lead to you winning the conversation. Listening carefully and acknowledging the other person’s feelings will lead to you both winning.
