The 5 Elements Of Emotional Intelligence For Successful Leaders

There are six core skills to be a great leader. The first one is emotional intelligence.

Emotional intelligence or EQ for short is described as the ability to monitor your own and others emotions, discriminate between emotions and label them and use that knowledge to guide your thinking. Research has shown that EQ is often more predictive of success than IQ.

The concept was popularized by Daniel Goleman in his book, Emotional Intelligence.

As leaders, it’s important that we have a strong understanding of this topic.

How well do you rate yourself on these following five elements of EQ as listed by Daniel Goleman:

Build your self-awareness.

Self-Awareness

This refers to the ability to see emotional patterns in yourself and to recognize how emotions affect you and those around you. As a leader, you should be able to see emotional patterns in specific situations and also understand your own strengths and weaknesses.

A simple way to improve your self-awareness is to maintain a journal and record your thoughts everyday for ten minutes.

Self-Regulation

People who are able to self-regulate tend to manage their emotions without blowing off steam at the expense of others. They are neither hasty nor brash in how they express themselves.

Practice deep breathing exercises daily instead of blowing off steam.

Motivation

How motivated are you to pursue your goals? Self-motivation is a key element of EQ.

A simple way to inspire yourself at an emotional level is to understand the WHY behind what you’re doing.

Empathy

Empathy is about sharing and understanding the feelings of another person.

How well do you empathize with your colleagues and team members?

Practice empathy by asking yourself – what would it feel like to be the other person right now?

Social Skills

Social skills refer to your ability to be a role model, communicate, and manage change effectively. Leaders who have strong social skills are able to inspire their team towards better performance.

Improve on this element by asking for feedback from your boss and your team on how well you listen and express yourself.

 

Stick to the elements you are doing well at the moment.

Seek tangible feedback and address improvement areas that are the biggest obstacles of your continued success.
